Chairman Lidinsky and Senator Inouye

December 2012 brought the sad news of the passing of Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D- HI). Senator Inouye was an expert on and a champion of the US maritime industry. On June 14, 2011, I had the honor of presenting him with the Federal Maritime Commission Certificate and Award of Merit for his strong and dedicated support during war and peace of the waterborne commerce of the United States, the American merchant marines and the growth of our exports. During our meeting in his US Capitol office, Senator Inouye reminisced about former Federal Maritime Commission Chairman and Congresswoman Helen D. Bentley and former House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Chairman Edwards A. Garmatz, two Marylanders with whom he served in Congress during his record-setting tenure.

The Commission sends its sincere condolences to the Senator’s family and to the citizens of Hawaii.
