The Commission issued an Industry Advisory about self-executing provisions of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 (PL 117-146).
The Federal Maritime Commission approved a settlement agreement reached between its Bureau of Enforcement and Hapag-Lloyd AG where the ocean carrier will pay a $2 million civil penalty to address alleged violations related to their detention and demurrage practices.
Commissioner Dye Releases Final Report for Fact Finding No. 29
The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is establishing three new initiatives that will provide enhanced assistance to shippers, continue to improve legal and regulatory compliance of regulated entities, and focus on remedies to supply chain problems.
Chairman Maffei issued a statement commending the passage of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022.
Chairman Daniel B. Maffei delivered the keynote address at the Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) Annual Meeting last week, addressing the recently passed Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 and outlining new initiatives implemented by the Commission to mitigate supply chain congestion and related issues.

Commissioner Max M. Vekich commended Secretary Tom Vilsack for the recently announced U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative that will assist American-grown agricultural products to reach global markets.
Commissioners Bentzel and Vekich commended the Commission’s Bureau of Enforcement for its work in reaching a $2 million settlement agreement with Hapag-Lloyd with regards to unreasonable assessment of detention and demurrage charges.

Federal Maritime Commissioners Carl W. Bentzel, Louis E. Sola, and Max M. Vekich, in their capacity as individual Commissioners, submitted comments to the Surface Transportation Board objecting to the proposed consolidation of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Ltd. and the Kansas City Southern Railway.
The Commission held a closed meeting pursuant to authority under 46 U.S.C. § 46103(c); 46 C.F.R. § 503.84.
