On May 16th Commissioner Maffei traveled to Hamburg, Germany to participate in the Global Liner Shipping Conference. The Commissioner gave a talk titled “Challenges in Regulating an Increasingly Commodified and Data-Driven industry.” During his talk, the Commissioner discussed how the technological developments in ship-size, automation, and data (along with fewer alliances and increased consolidation) are leading toward greater commoditization. He further discussed how the lack of differentiation between competing liners creates a regulatory challenge for anti-trust regulators, as well as how U.S. regulators meet some of those challenges.

Following the conference, the Commissioner traveled to Copenhagen, where he met with representatives from the Danish Maritime Authority as well as other industry representatives.

Commissioner Maffei meets with Andreas Nordseth, Director General and Sanne Henriksen, Senior Adviser, Blue Growth and Maritime Policy, of the Danish Maritime Authority.
