The IAPH’s 28th World Ports Conference took place May 6-10, 2013, with a theme of “Working on Today, Focusing on Tomorrow.” The conference attracted port and maritime officials from around the world to discuss maritime issues such as climate change, piracy, the economy, and other problems affecting ships and the ports where they dock. Chairman Cordero gave opening remarks on May 7, 2013, which focused on smart and sustainable port operations. Chairman Cordero noted 90% of the world’s goods travel by sea, and those ships produce about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Based on the clear impact the shipping industry has on the environment, Chairman Cordero commented that the industry has reacted and is on board with reducing pollution.
