The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is the independent federal agency responsible for regulating the U.S. international ocean transportation system for the benefit of U.S. exporters, importers, and the U.S. consumer.
Our mission is to ensure a competitive and reliable international ocean transportation supply system that supports the U.S economy and protects the public from unfair and deceptive practices.
What We Do
- Enforce laws and regulations related to ocean shipping and transportation
- Ensure compliance with the Shipping Act statute and regulations through reviews of business records and practices of Ocean Transportation Intermediaries (OTIs) and other entities.
- Monitor filed service contracts, agreements, and market conditions to promote competition and prevent anticompetitive behavior
- Issue licensure to industry professionals that demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards
- Assist in filing and reviewing tariffs for compliance with regulations and to ensure transparency and fairness in pricing
