Readout of Meeting Between FMC Chairman Louis E. Sola and Danish Maritime Authority DG Brian Wessel

Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Louis E. Sola and Director General Brian Wessel of the Danish Maritime Authority met on June 2, 2025, to discuss the recently launched FMC investigations and broader U.S. Maritime policy issues.

“The United States is more focused on shipping and commercial maritime than it has been in decades. My conversation with DG Wessel allowed me to convey clearly what the Commission sees as its priorities, especially in terms of promoting U.S.-flagged shipping.  The United States is determined to expand its maritime industrial base, expand its merchant fleet, and play a leading role in commercial maritime issues. The American maritime economy is poised for growth and there are real opportunities for investment in this sector, including from friendly nations. Danish companies already provide valuable transportation and logistics services to the people, companies, and even the Government of the United States. These same Danish companies should be identifying ways in which they can increase their presence and investment in this country beyond the typical footprint they have in just any other commercial market.

“I also flagged my concerns about the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its failure to address substandard and irresponsible ships registries. Unscrupulous owners and operators, or those involved in illegal activities, often seek refuge in registries minimally concerned with compliance and transparency. The IMO should be leading on this issue, but they have failed in doing so. The Federal Maritime Commission’s recently launched investigation of flag-state practices demonstrates needed leadership where others have chosen to turn a blind eye.”
