On June 11, 2025, Commissioner Max Vekich addressed the National Defense Transportation Association’s Surface Force Projection Conference at Christopher Newport University in Norfolk, VA.
Commissioner Vekich provided insight into the role of the Federal Maritime Commission in protecting U.S. trades from adverse foreign influence, as well as promoting national economic security. He noted that the FMC’s recent actions and investigations in relation to Spain, chokepoints, and flags of convenience are examples of the current steps the Commission is taking to fulfill its mission.
Commissioner Vekich stated that “In an era of fierce maritime competition, the control and security of trade routes, shipping capacity, and maritime labor have become as strategically important as aircraft carriers. If we want to remain a global leader, we must invest in our maritime future — through smart policy, strategic oversight, and unwavering support for those who are building, loading, and sailing our ships.”
