Office of the Managing Director

The Office of the Managing Director is responsible for:

  1. implementing the administrative directives of the Chairman,
  2. managing and coordinating the Commission's Bureaus and Area Representatives, and
  3. planning and directing information technology and information management services.

The Commission maintains Area Representatives in:

  • Houston
  • Los Angeles 
  • New Orleans
  • New York
  • Seattle
  • South Florida

Area Representatives serve other major port cities and transportation centers within these jurisdictions.

Area Representatives:

  • Represent the Commission as local contacts for the maritime industry and the shipping public,
  • Collect and analyze information of regulatory significance,
  • Provide monitoring and investigative functions, and
  • Assess industry conditions.


Due to a lapse in appropriations, the FMC's website may not be up to date after December 22, 2018. Applications and databases will not be available and links may not function properly. No transactions or filings will be accepted until appropriations legislation is enacted and the federal government reopens.
