FMC Awards Gold Medal to Chairman Louis E. Sola for Exceptional Leadership

Today, June 30, 2025, the Federal Maritime Commission recognized the leadership and contributions of Chairman and former Commissioner Louis E. Sola by awarding him a Gold Medal and Citation on his last day of service.

Chairman Sola served at the Commission for over six years. He was first confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 2, 2019, as a Commissioner, and President Trump appointed him as Chairman on January 20, 2025.

During his time at the Commission, Chairman Sola left a meaningful impact in many ways, including leading Fact Finding 30, an investigation into commercial measures that passenger cruise lines could adopt to mitigate COVID-19 related impacts. During this time of extreme uncertainty in the cruise and shipping industries, Chairman Sola worked diligently to address the post-COVID-19 supply chain logistics crisis disruptions.

Chairman Sola’s leadership and service to the Commission has been invaluable. His commitment to public service towards both the shipping industry and American public is honorable.

“Lou Sola has been a great asset to the Federal Maritime Commission as Commissioner and as Chairman. I will miss his support and friendship and look forward to following his career advancement,” said Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye. “Lou, all the best that life has to offer!”

“The two of us have been working closely together ever since our Senate Confirmations, including making important official trips together and testifying together on vital maritime issues. I know first-hand how hard he has worked to improve ocean transportation for American shippers and cruise passengers,” remarked Commissioner Daniel B. Maffei.

“It has been both a pleasure and an honor to serve on the Commission with Chairman Lou Sola. Chairman Sola has covered maritime interests around the country, from Miami to Seattle/Alaska and LA/LB to New York. He has been a visionary leader, focusing on protecting American maritime interests as we look to revitalize U.S. maritime dominance to ensure our economic security,” stated Commissioner Max Vekich. “I wish Chaiman Sola fair winds, following seas and the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.”
