FMC Announces Appointment of Peter J. King as General Counsel

The Federal Maritime Commission ("FMC" or "Commission") today announced the appointment of Peter J. King as its General Counsel, effective September 28, 2008. Mr. King has served as Acting General Counsel since February, 2008.
Mr. King joined the Commission in 1987 as a Trial Attorney in the Commission's Bureau of Enforcement, and later became that Bureau's Deputy Director; from 2004-2006, he served as Deputy Director of the Commission's Bureau of Certification and Licensing. He was appointed Director of the FMC's Office of Administration and a member of the Commission's Senior Executive Service in April, 2007. He began his career as an associate attorney with the law firm of Hoppel Mayer & Coleman in Washington D.C., practicing in the areas of transportation, vessel financing and customs law.
Mr. King is a lifelong resident of Maryland; he is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and the National Law Center, George Washington University. From 1991-2003, Mr. King concurrently served as an elected Councilman to the City of College Park, Maryland. He is a past member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and a past voting member of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board. He continues to reside in College Park with his wife Mary and their six children.
In appointing Mr. King, the Commission recognizes the experience and dedication he brings to the position of General Counsel. The Commissioners look forward to working with him in the future.
