Vacancy Announcement
The Office of the General Counsel, Federal Maritime Commission ("FMC"), is recruiting for several attorney positions (GS-11/15). These positions have promotional potential to a GS-15.
The FMC is a small independent regulatory agency which oversees oceanborne transportation in the nation's foreign trades, and administers statutes which include the Shipping Act of 1984, the Foreign Shipping Practices Act of 1988, and section 19 of the Merchant Marine Act, 1920. The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice to the Commission, reviews staff recommendations for Commission action, drafts Commission documents reflecting agency decisions on rulemakings and adjudications, and litigates on behalf of the Commission before the courts. The Office also administers the agency's international affairs program, serves as agency liaison to Congress, and provides legal counsel on various in-house matters. Applicants for the attorney position should have excellent research and writing skills. Current active membership in a state bar is required, and at least one year of experience as an attorney is required for consideration above the entry grade of GS-11. Relevant legal experience is required at the GS-12 and above levels. The duty station is Washington, D.C. More than one position may be filled. Relocation expenses will not be paid.
All submissions must include 1) a cover letter describing your qualifications and interests; 2) a writing sample; and 3) OF-Form 612 (Optional Application for Federal Employment), or a resume that contains equivalent information. Applicants with less than two years legal experience are required to submit a photocopy of their Law School transcript. Current Federal employees should submit a copy of their most recent performance appraisal and SF-50, "Notification of Personnel Action."
