Vacancy Announcement
The Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ), Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), is recruiting for an Attorney-Advisor (GS-13/14). This position has promotional potential to a GS-14.
The FMC is a small independent regulatory agency which oversees oceanborne transportation in the nation's foreign trades, and administers statutes which include the Shipping Act of 1984, the Foreign Shipping Practices Act of 1988, and section 19 of the Merchant Marine Act, 1920. OALJ functions in a manner similar to a judicial court and is responsible for resolving complaints and investigations concerning maritime transportation matters that the Commission has assigned to it. Applicants for this position should have excellent research and writing skills as well as expert knowledge of the Shipping Act and regulations administered by the Commission, the Administrative Procedure Act, the rules of civil procedure, and the rules of evidence. Successful candidates will be skilled in conducting legal research and analyses, communicate well orally and in writing and work cooperatively with others. Current active membership in a state bar is required, and at least one year of relevant legal experience as an attorney is required for consideration. The duty station is Washington, D.C. Relocation expenses will not be paid.
