The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is pleased to announce that it will be actively participating as a sponsor in the 2009 International Maritime Organization (IMO) World Maritime Day Parallel Event hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard on behalf of the United States on October 16th in New York City. With climate change as the theme for this large international gathering, the IMO's goal is to attract public, private, and government attention to the many environmental initiatives within the maritime community. FMC Chairman Richard A. Lidinsky, Jr. will represent the agency and underscore this message by emphasizing the importance of all maritime transportation sectors and the critical role they play in improving our environment. He also will raise awareness of Commission programs and operations that support maritime industry participants' efforts to implement responsible environmental practices at seaports and throughout the maritime logistics chain.

To promote the strength of the American maritime community as part of the Event, the FMC also is sponsoring the American Maritime Industry Quilt Project. A quintessentially American creation, the Quilt Project demonstrates the ability of multiple and diverse companies to come together to support the maritime community in America by literally being stitched together. Overall, four quilts will be created to commemorate World Maritime Day. Completed quilts will be presented to USCG Commandant Thad Allen, to Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos of the IMO, to President Obama, and the fourth tribute quilt will be donated to the Smithsonian Museum. Proceeds from the Quilt Project will be used to underwrite the transportation of school children to view the exhibitions and tour the ships during the Event and to promote a broader representation of the maritime community at future events.

A proud sponsor of the 2009 World Maritime Day Parallel Event, the FMC is an independent Federal agency responsible for consumer protection and regulatory oversight of oceanborne transportation in U.S. foreign commerce, for the benefit of the American consumer. The FMC implements regulations affecting activities and responsibilities of ocean carriers, ocean transportation intermediaries, passenger vessel operators, ports, and marine terminal operators. The FMC also seeks to work with U.S. carriers, ports and others in international marine transport to facilitate green projects and other job-creating innovations, consistent with FMC authority.
